I cannot reiterate enough the joys of exploring Sicily by car, it is easy to zig zag the island through mountains and valleys, weaving your way through endless small towns.
Sicily by road means effortlessly experiencing the ins and outs of the islands landscape and stopping at a local roadside Trattoria or family run restaurant will give you the most memorable literal taste of Sicily.

I have an out-of-order question, if you would be so kind. DECEMBER 12, 2014, there is a bread roll (looks like sourdough) with ice cream on it. Could you explain that? I simply couldn’t figure it out from the text and i meant to write in December, but December is crazy-time for me, so I forgot. I would love to try to make that, it looks so interesting.
I love your blog. I grew up around Sicilians. (My father’s family is from Rome, back a ways.) Back in the 60s, my friend’s grandfather had a secret shrine to Il Duce, with a real “holy card” and everything! Thanks for your work.

The photo is of the typical Sicilian ice cream burger, yes they serve fresh ice cream in sourdough in the summer, it sure beats an ice cream cone. You can even have it as your breakfast, it’s not for the faint hearted, you may die of head freeze but its something you need to try at least once in your life.

I’ve had this in a Gelateria in Palermo but in a brioche which, to my taste, complemented the ice-cream better than sourdough. It’s the ice-cream that counts though!
Yes, I always go for only ice cream, in a cup, no cone, brioche or soughdough to distract me from the divine taste!
I agree with you about travelling Sicily by car, it is the only way, but, a big but, I can’t drive there! I think Sicilians are even crazier than mainland Italians when on the road and when I mention this to one Siciliano he took it as a compliment! I even saw one light a cigarette at a filling station while he was awaiting his turn at the pumps. I am a good passenger but as for driving ……………………….. I leave that to someon else. If you have the nerve though, go for it. Inland Sicily and its villages is unbeatable.
Yes, Sicilians are crazy. I myself leave most of the driving to my Sicilian husband, he’s used to it. I drive when we are in Australia and he drives here, it works for us! But I am considering getting my Italian drivers licence as my little boy is starting school this year … wish me luck!
