I’ve never been a green thumb, actually I’m the direct polar opposite. If you name a plant I’ve probably killed it. One time I even managed to liquidate two cacti whom I had named Iglesias and Beniamino, they strangely rotted to death after I over watered them (yes I managed to over water a cactus, it would have been better for them if I simply forgot about them all together but I managed to smother my cacti!)
I’ve been getting out into the garden thanks to my highly practical vegetable garden lover husband, to get some exercise and for the benefit of my son who loves the idea of getting dirty. It’s actually great to have fresh vegetables throughout the year and it saves you some money too!
This time of the year in Sicily there is the promise of winter fruits and vegetables like: pomegranates, persimmons,cauliflower, broccoli, fennel, peas and broad beans.
My favourite has to be the fuzzy kiwi fruit and this year there seems to be a bumper crop on the way :
We planted our broad beans and peas together with my son who proudly displayed what he had just planted.
We are lucky to have access to a wonderful piece of fertile Sicilian land out on the country property of my in laws that has given us so much wonderful food over the years. So here’s to the cathartic nature of the garden and to tasting it’s fruit.
