About me

            Rochelle Del Borrello

Hello,

I am an Italo Australian writer who ran away to Sicily sixteen years ago, to the surprise of my family, friends and myself.

Ever since moving to Italy I’ve been teaching ESL and writing about my experiences in Sicily .

This blog is all about my obsession with the island and its culture.

I love food, slow travel, photography, creative writing, music, reading books and all things Italian.

I live a misadventurous life near Messina as a full time Mummy, part time writer and life long creative.

Drop me a line if you want to know more or collaborate.

sicilyinsideandout@gmail.com

Cheers

Sapore di sale, sapore di mare,is a famous Italian song from the 1960’s, written by  Gino Paoli it was inspired by the sandy white beaches of Capo d’orlando and was performed in a local nightclub near the bay of San Gregorio where the singer first sung the song for some friends. It became in iconic anthem for a typical Sicilian summer at the beach, we’ll be playing it loudly in a couple of months.
Looking towards Palermo from Capo d’orlando.
The coastal town of Capo d’orlando in april is prestine and blissful, in a couple of months these beaches will be packed.
A local drop of red.
A Trattoria on a plate.
Three things which make up lunch or dinner at a Sicilian trattoria or ‘baracca’, sliced small goods, cheese and barbecued meat.
For lovers of cheese, Italy is heaven as every supermarket has a great selection of european and local lovelies like these Sicilian Calcio di Cavallo, a wonderful fresh cow milk cheese which is heavenly. Sicily has literally hundreds of cheeses which have been made for centuries on the island from cow milk, to goat cheeses and sheep milk. So irresistable.
I love how all little family run restaurants or trattorias insist on having an extensive local wine list. Here at my local Trattoria dei F.lli Borrello in Messina province the selection is right before your eyes.
I’m persistaintly reminded of how fashionable and elegant Italian’s are. There sense of style is always so strong and bold. I love window shopping in the major cities as shop windows are always so creative. I was struck by this home store’s front window at Capo d’orlando eventhough I could never imagine having a giant ceramic head on my coffee table.
A maestro of #almond #torrone at work...
Cute little Sicilian cacti all in a row ...
Easter market day in little old Sinagra, stalls lined up under the castle.
The Tyrrhenian sea is always so beautiful.
The #Aeolian islands are always so mesmerising, they are like magical sirens on the horizon who tempt you to leap into the sea and swim to them, eventhough they are too far away.
The Northern Coastline of #Sicily is amazing, the sea is always so expressive and clear. The landscape takes your breathe away and on a clear day like today you can name each of the towns you see along the seaside. Here is Ponte di #Naso, #Brolo and #Piraino.
